Removable Partial Dentures

Removable partial dentures are used to replace a single tooth or missing multiple teeth. This denture is composed of the artificial teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored base made of acrylic. Sometimes this base is connected to a metal framework that holds the denture in place inside the mouth.

Different Types of Removable Partial Dentures

Thermosen/ Flexite Partial Denture

This type of partial denture is hypoallergenic, light-weight, comfortable to wear, virtually unbreakable and flexible because of the lack of metal parts.

One-Piece Casting With Lucitone Partial Denture

This type of partial denture consists of a metal framework with ordinary gum colored acrylic. One-piece Lucitone partial dentures are known for being durable and better-fitting.

Stay Plate (Wire Clasp) Partial Denture

This Partial denture is a temporary denture used while the gums and supporting bone are healing after an extraction or before getting a more durable type of  partial denture. A Stay plate partial denture will replace the missing tooth or teeth, and can assist with chewing and/or speaking until a more durable partial denture is used.

Precision Attachment Partial Denture

Precision attachment partial dentures connect removable partial dentures to a fixed bridgework under a male/female locking mechanism. Some advantages to this type of partial denture include maintainable periodontal health, less force on abutment teeth, better cosmetic appearance, longevity, and stability.

Pros and Cons of Removable Partial Dentures

Dentures play a vital role in maintaining a good oral health status. This is because when there are missing teeth, the remaining teeth may shift or move which drastically affects a person’s bite and appearance. Missing teeth can also lead to jawbone deterioration among other things.

If partial removable dentures are not maintained properly, it can contribute to plaque retention and lead to tooth decay on the remaining teeth. With partial removable dentures, there are also visible portions, frameworks, or clasps which tend to not look aesthetically pleasing. A removable partial denture is also prone to wear, fatigue on the clasps, and poor fit.

Dentures help in solving the problems associated with missing teeth. These dental prostheses also help improve a person’s eating function and prevent the face from sagging to retain a more youthful look.
