Composite or Direct Veneers

Composite or Direct Veneers

Composite veneers sometimes referred to as Direct veneers, is a cosmetic dental procedure done in one visit and is sculpted at the time of placement. With this treatment, the composite resin, made of the same material used for tooth-colored dental fillings/restorations, is applied in layers to the tooth and sculpted to improve the size, shape, length, form, and color of the teeth. Each layer of composite resin is hardened using a curing light.

It is common for a small amount of tooth structure to be removed to allow space for the placement of the composite resin. This is to avoid making the teeth look bulky! In most cases, composite veneers are more conservative of the tooth structure as fewer amounts of the tooth structure are needed to be removed.

This type of veneer provides a life-like, beautiful appearance that can last for 5 to 10 years depending on the patient’s oral health and maintenance.

*Overcrowding

Composite/ Direct veneers are used for the following cases:

  • Chipping or discoloration of the natural teeth
  • Minor misalignments of the teeth

However, despite being used to create a more appealing smile, composite or direct veneers cannot be used to fill in large spaces or gaps between the teeth. Putting too much bulk of composite resin can lead to the failure of the restoration.

Composite veneers are also not an ideal treatment for lengthening very short teeth or for repairing large, broken-off parts of the edge of a tooth.

Advantages of Composite/ Direct Veneers

  • Can be done in a single visit
  • Can be done with less tooth preparation.
  • Affordable

Disadvantages of Composite/ Direct Veneers

  • Not as durable as porcelain veneers and requires more care as they are more likely to chip.
  • Tend to stain more easily.
