What Is Tartar?
But first, some understanding of what tartar is, and what causes it.
You need more than taking care of your teeth at home to tame the bacteria in your mouth. Unfortunately, they mix with food byproducts and proteins you eat forming a sticky film called dental plaque — and once it calcifies from your saliva, it becomes tartar.
Then, it coats the exterior of your teeth and invades below the gum line. And because it’s penetrable, drinks and foods can easily stain tartar, causing havoc on your dental health.
So, it’s highly recommended to remove tartar from a dentist’s office.
Ways To Remove Tartar From Your Teeth
It takes a professional to properly remove tartar. In this part, we’ll discuss the ways we use to remove tartar from our patient’s teeth:
Start With A Dental Cleaning
The first part of every dental treatment: cleaning the insides of a patient’s mouth. Our dentist will use a dental mirror to examine your teeth and gums to see any potential issues such as tartar buildup. If our dentist spots tartar on our patient’s teeth, they will remove it with a dental instrument called a scaler. It has a hook on its end that removes tartar above and below the gum line. If there’s an excessive amount of tartar on your teeth’s surface or if you have periodontal disease, our dentist will highly recommend dental scaling and root planning. It’s a dental procedure that removes the hardened tartar in a non-surgical process.- Dental radiographs will be taken to check if there are tartar inside the gums and a special instrument is used to check the depth of the gum pockets.
- Local anesthetic will be placed on the area that needs to be treated sub gingi
- Ultrasonic scalers will be used to remove tartar deposits from the teeth's roots or crowns.
- Scalers and curettes are used to remove remaining deposits in the deeper pockets and to ensure smooth and clean tooth surfaces.
- Book an appointment after 1-2 weeks to measure the pockets again.
